Young Canada Works in Both Official Languages (YCWBOL)
Summer Jobs
Prairies and Northern Canada (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Nunavut, Northwest Territories)

Who can take part in the program? The summer jobs are for students registered full-time in the semester preceding their employment, who intend to return to full-time studies in the semester following the summer job.

Priority is given to students whose permanent residence is more than 125 km from the job site.

Students must work in their second official language or in an official minority language.

How long do the jobs last?



  • 6 to 16 weeks
  • 30 to 40 hours per week
  • Students with disabilities are eligible for part-time positions
  • Work assignments are between the months of May and September

What funding is available?


The YCW subsidy is up to:

  • 70% of salary costs for non-profit organizations (NPO)
  • 50% of salary costs for private or public sector employers or municipalities

Funding is awarded on the basis of the number of eligible applications received and an evaluation of them.

How do I apply?

We strongly recommend that you consult the Employers Guide, particularly Appendix B, before completing your application.

We would suggest that you prepare the information ahead of time in another document so that you can cut and paste it into the on-line application form.

How are applications evaluated? The evaluation is carried out by the Delivery Organization based on the information requested in Appendix B of the Employer Guide.

When are the decisions made?


The decisions are generally made between the middle of February and the beginning of March, unless notice is given to the contrary.

All employers who have submitted a completed application will receive a response by telephone or e-mail.

If my application is approved, what administrative documents will have to be completed?


Employers who receive funding from the YCWBOL must sign a contract and complete the required administrative documents at the beginning of the employment period. They must also ensure that students hired through the program complete all their documents.

What is the hiring process? As a YCW employer, you must:

  • undertake a fair and equitable selection process (including public competitions and an impartial evaluation of eligible applicants) and respond to applicants in a timely manner (you may be asked to explain your selection process in writing to your delivery organization);
  • ensure that all applicants are registered in the YCW on-line applicant data base and that they meet the program’s eligibility criteria (see eligible applicants);
  • prior to hiring the selected applicant, fill out and submit the Applicant Eligibility Form to your Delivery Organization for pre-approval of the eligibility of the selected applicants;
  • respect all relevant labour legislation and regulations of the federal government and of the provincial or territorial government, including work safety standards and employment insurance or the equivalent;
  • recognize the financial assistance of the Government of Canada in your advertizing and media activities. For permission to use the YCW logo, write to the YCWBOL official email address.
